Facts about Saffron Walden

Gibson WI is based in the charming town of Saffron Walden, that has had a thriving and vibrant market since 1141. Currently market days are Tuesday and Saturday, and the varied stalls are well worth a visit. Surrounding the picturesque Market Square are a variety of independent and chain shops which cater for most needs, housed in a rich variety of buildings in a range of styles from Tudor to the modern day, reflecting the wealth of this busy market town. There are coffee shops and eating establishments a-plenty, where the WI can meet for social gatherings.

It is easy to walk around our town and the tourist information centre is a font of knowledge and local maps. St Mary’s Church dominates the skyline looking northwards, and has the accolade being the largest church in Essex. The area has excellent schools, many outstanding; Saffron Hall, a world class concert venue and Saffron Screen where high quality films and concerts can be enjoyed without the 50-mile journey to London.

Audley End House, an English Heritage property, can be found on the outskirts of the town. There is a thriving museum and the Fry Art Gallery boasts the work of the Great Bardfield artists, among others. There are four mazes, an ancient turf maze on the Common, a Victorian yew hedge in Bridge End Gardens, the Jubilee Garden Bandstand Labyrinth and the Swan Meadow maze.  All a delightful, well-maintained arrangement of outdoor “rooms” to walk through or sit and enjoy.
