Before I moved to Saffron Walden, my working knowledge of the WI was mostly from watching old movies, where making cakes and “doing good works” appeared to be the main mission of the Women’s Institute. It seemed, well… rather old fashioned. However, eager to connect with women in my new community, I took the plunge and went to my first meeting. I was so pleased to receive a warm welcoming greeting. I found the speaker to be informative and entertaining, and yes, there was cake! That very first night I met interesting and intelligent women who have subsequently become good friends.
I realise now, that it’s the members that are the essence of the WI—how making a personal connection, whether in our larger community or one-to-one with someone with shared interests is so important. The Gibson WI provides opportunities for most women with our varied activities; not only our monthly regular meetings, but everything from organised rambles through gardens; visits to stately homes; participating in charity endeavours at the local and national level; lunches and coffee mornings; crafting sessions where we can share our skills and talents; and a monthly meeting where we have discussions (and often stimulating debates) about a shared book we all read. Our members may participate in as many or as few of these activities as they desire.
Admittedly, there are people who may consider what we do to be “quaint” or old-fashioned; but as we are living in somewhat stressful times, it is just that aspect of the WI that I personally find most appealing. Joining a community of inspiring active women was just what I needed to tune out the white noise of a busy modern life.
I am honoured to have been elected president for this next term, and hope I can live up to the example set by Sue H., my accomplished predecessor.
If you feel that you would like to meet people who may share your interests, please join us at your first meeting as our guest.
Lisa M, President, Gibson WI
